Eighth-annual Edison Band Show scheduled for Saturday

The eighth-annual Edison Band Show – “Tearin’ Up the Turf – VIII” – will feature nearly 500 performers from high school marching bands come Saturday at Edison High School’s Cartwright Memorial Stadium located at 9890 state Route 152, Richmond.

The musical gala gets under way at 7 p.m. with admission being $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and students.

“The event is the only one of its kind in Jefferson County,” said Marc Sansone, Edison band director. “It is an evening where several area bands get together to share music with the crowd and each other. Many groups would not normally face-off in football, so it gives them a chance to see other bands – nearly 500 performers in all,” Sansone said.

The show will feature marching bands from Bridgeport, Beaver Local, Edison, Indian Creek, Oak Glen, Steubenville High School and Thomas Jefferson, Pittsburgh.

Sansone described the event as a festival and not a competition although bands involved do receive a plaque in appreciation of participating.

“Fans can send candy grams to their favorite band members,” Sansone said. “There are T-shirts for sale that recognize the groups on the back like a rock concert,” he added.

This year’s theme bears a “Bands of Steel” catch phrase. Last year’s was “Tearin’ Up the Turf – VII, Heaven on Turf.”

Bands are not charged any fee to enter, according to Sansone, who noted many area merchants sponsor the event.

“Edison band parents host a meet and greet for all band members and staff before the event where they can mix and mingle and have a picnic-style meal together,” Sansone said.

Proceeds from the event go toward transportation costs, music, repairs, uniforms and pay-to-participate fees that students have in order to be in the band.

The Edison band parents supplement the individual costs through this event and other fundraising projects.

Donations can be sent to EHS Band Boosters at 9890 state Route 152, Richmond, OH 43944.
