Church happenings

Open house at

Two Ridges

Two Ridges Presbyterian Church in Wintersville will hold an open house all day on July 27 as part of the 150th anniversary of the raid of Gen. John Hunt Morgan.

The skirmish of Two Ridges took place near the church building, which sits on the site of the 1853 church building which existed at the time of Morgan’s Civil War raid.

One of the 1913 markers erected to observe the event is in the front yard of the church and has been supplemented with a new display marker telling the history of the skirmish, and showing a drawing of the 1853 church building.

Union soldier Martin Kean of the Michigan Cavalry was wounded at the skirmish at Two Ridges and died a month later. He is buried in the Two Ridges Cemetery near the church.

Visitors will be able to visit the cemetery as well as the current 1887 church building which was constructed using timbers of the previous building, and contains a black walnut ceiling made from trees cut on the site in 1887.
