Ash Wednesday

service at Zion

Zion United Church of Christ located at 139 N. fifth St., Steubenville, will hold an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. It will be preceded by a “meager meal” at 6 p.m. where participants are encouraged to bring a can of soup, non-creamed, and some fruit to share.

The service that will follow will include the imposition of ashes.

Satellite vets

office to be open

The satellite office of the Jefferson County Veterans Service Commission will be open from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Toronto American Legion, 415 Market St., Toronto, to assist veterans, dependents of veterans, and/or veterans’ widows with Veterans Administration pensions, compensations, burials, schooling, medical assistance and other veterans’ benefits.

Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is closed every Wednesday afternoon to the public

Woodland Garden

Club has meeting

There were 13 members in attendance for the Feb. 7 meeting of the Woodland Garden Club of Wintersville where Linda Nolf offered the opening prayer.

Hostesses Gretchen Nelson and Nolf served hot soup, salad and Valentine treats. Nancy Hukill shared an inspirational gardener’s prayer. Roll call was answered by naming a favorite Valentine treat.

Tickets for an Ohio Association of Garden Clubs drawing are on sale for eight different gift showcases with winning tickets to be drawn during the OAGC convention in August, it was announced. Plans are being made to attend the convention.

Communications were received from Betty Clark for the memorial donation to the Wahkeena State Nature Preserve in memory of her husband, Bill. A thank-you also was received from Paula Nutter for flowers sent for the recent loss of her husband, Jack.

A “white elephant sale” will be held at the March meeting.

Jeannie Barker presented a garden tip, explaining that it is time to order seeds, but cautioned everyone to be mindful of the time available to actually plant and take care of all the plants and seeds.

Nancy Liggett presented the artistic design for the evening with a creative “Z” floral arrangement.

Dinner to aid

learning center

A spaghetti dinner to benefit the 32nd degree Learning Center will be held Saturday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Unionport Masonic Lodge No. 333 located on county Road 39, Unionport.

The dinner includes spaghetti and meat sauce, salad, bread and butter, cake and ice cream. Carryouts will be available.

Vets service panel

meets Wednesday

The regular monthly meeting of the Jefferson County Veterans Service Commission will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the War Memorial Building, 423 North St., Steubenville.

All veterans or interested parties are welcome to attend.

Weirton church

having fish fry

St. Thomas Episcopal Church will hold a Coleman’s fish fry from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday in the church parish hall located at 300 Three Springs Drive, Weirton.

Dinners include Coleman’s fish, fries, coleslaw and a beverage. Take-out will be available. A fish fry will be held each Friday until Good Friday, March 29.
