Amateur Radio Club classes set

The Steubenville-Weirton Amateur Radio Club will host a class in amateur radio from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays for eight weeks, beginning Jan. 12, at the Mary H. Weir Public library.

At the end of the class, an Amateur Radio Technician License Exam will be administered, and those passing will receive a license.

No previous radio or electronics knowledge is necessary, and Morse Code is no longer required for the amateur radio licenses.

The number of amateur radio operators, or “hams,” has increased significantly over the past several years, and the total number of hams in the United States is at an all-time high, according to a club spokesperson.

Besides the hobby aspects, hams assist with emergency communications when normal communications services are disrupted by disasters.

There is no charge for the class, but a text book can be purchased, and there is a $15 fee for the exam. Pre-registration is requested.

For information or pre-registration, contact Lester Shields at (304) 723-1743.
