Gift shop with unique spin opens
STEUBENVILLE — Ashley Byers likes surrounding herself with things that are sparkly and pretty, handmade or even just well-made. So it makes sense that when she opened her own gift shop in downtown Steubenville, she’d fill it with things she’d love to have in her own home.
Her shop, Ashley’s Home Decor & More, opened in September at 104 S. Fourth St., just across from the Grand Theater.
“I like things that are different,” said Byers, a Richmond resident. “I love decorating, I love fashion, I love art and I love meeting people and putting a smile on their face when they buy something.”
Byers said she always wanted to have her own business.
“I was in sales a lot of years, my dream was always to own my own business,” she said. “And I’ve always loved downtown … to me now, it’s a lot like in the old days, whole families would come downtown. It’s been a wonderful opportunity for me.”
The shop features plenty of bling in the form of purses and jewelry, as well as chandeliers, dog bowls, Crossroads Candles, baby cradles, scarves, ponchos and holiday decor. Her husband, Greg, also makes customized furniture pieces.
“We can build anything our customers would want,” she said, pointing out several of his pieces are on display.
“I try to find things that are different; I try to find things that are unique that people won’t find anywhere else,” she said. “To me, this is more like a gift shop.”
She likes being part of the new wave of downtown merchants, too.
“I’m very excited,” she said. “When I look at all the old pictures of Steubenville, it looks like it’s starting to come back. There’s something magical about being downtown, it’s starting to look like it used to with little shops and the coffee shop. Those kinds of things make people want to (come here). It’s different and unique.”
