Wheeling Heritage inventories office space

WHEELING — There is no comprehensive list of available office space in downtown Wheeling, but Wheeling Heritage plans to compile one this spring with help from an Americorps recruit.

The group wants to catalog empty properties, buildings and office space in Wheeling so any available locations can be identified when potential tenants come calling, said Alex Weld, project coordinator and outreach director for Wheeling Heritage.

Weld said Wheeling Heritage has received calls from businesses wishing to relocate to Wheeling, seeking information about offices of a specific size with certain amenities.

“But there is not a cohesive list of properties, surprisingly,” she said. “Depending on what potential developers are looking for, we want to guide them in the right direction. It seems like the logical next step.”

Wheeling Heritage is looking for an Americorps recruit to start immediately.

The recruit would work full-time for a three-month period with city and county officials, as well as other organizations such as the Regional Economic Development Partnership and property owners to determine vacancies in the city.

“We think this is the right time to do this when you look at how things are going in Wheeling,” Weld said. “Things are starting to shift. We are getting inquiries on a regular basis. We have had offices calling and wanting to relocate to Wheeling. They gave us specifics on what they wanted.

“How much easier it would have been if we had a list that was updated.”

Wheeling Heritage sees the information as something important that also could be shared and used by other groups, according to Weld.

Those interested in applying for the Americorps job should be at least 18 and have some college experience.

Information can be obtained by calling Danielle LaPresta at (304) 345-6005.
