FOLLANSBEE — As the mother of a 2-year-old, Elizabeth Cuic knows how quickly children can grow out of clothes, often before they have had a chance to wear them out.

And she is offering a temporary home for such clothing, as well as used women’s clothing, including maternity items in good condition at Parker’s Place, her consignment and thrift shop at 1031 Main St., which was the location for many years of HR&S Video.

Cuic said her goal is to provide quality clothing and accessories, including many brand names, in good condition and at affordable prices.

“A lot of our clothes still have tags on them,” she said, adding all used clothing brought to the store is cleaned and pressed before it’s displayed.

The store can’t accept for donation or consignment clothing that is faded, torn or stained, she said.

Cuic said the store stocks other items for infants, such as strollers and car seats, and there are plans to expand its supply of women’s accessories, such as handbags and shoes, as well as clothing for men.

She said the value of such a store occurred to her when her husband, Chad, a New Cumberland native, was laid off and she was 3 months pregnant.

Fortunately, Chad has returned to work, but the situation gave her a better appreciation for the plight of those without jobs.

He and Cuic’s father and brother, Art and Aaron Quattrocchi, helped her to prepare the store for its recent opening.

A graduate of Brooke High School, West Liberty University and Franciscan University of Steubenville, where she earned a master’s degree in business administration, Cuic worked in accounting in the Pittsburgh area for several years before deciding to start her own business. She said it allows her to spend more time with her family, including her son, Parker, for whom the store is named.

Cuic was pleased by sales during the business’ recent grand opening and is hopeful Parker’s Place will fill a niche in the community.

“I remember growing up here in Follansbee and there was a business in every storefront. We need that again. There’s so much traffic (on adjacent state Route 2). There’s no reason we can’t have that,” she said.

Chamber President Tony Paesano said small businesses such as Parker’s Place “are the backbone of the American economy” and the ones where many turn when they are seeking support for a school fundraiser, sports team or other cause.

He and fellow members of the Follansbee Chamber of Commerce welcomed Parker’s Place to the city with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Photos of merchandise available at the store and announcements of specials can be found at its Facebook page at ShopParkersPlace.
