SUPPORT: Sincerely Yogurt Steubenville participated in two recent events supporting local charities and community events.

At the Community Bike Ride sponsored by the Urban Mission and held at Jim Wood Park, participants and volunteers could sample some of the popular toppings offered at the frozen yogurt shop, receive coupons and enter to win a $20 gift card.

Sincerely Yogurt also supported “Shop For A Cause” at Macy’s at the Fort Steuben Mall. Salted caramel truffles, pecan pie crust pieces and waffle cone bits were just a few of the samples that shoppers could try.

In addition, they could sample Peanut Butter Passion, a dessert topping and fondue that will be available in September at Sincerely Yogurt.

Sincerely Yogurt opened in May in Hollywood City Center next to Huntington Bank.

INDUCTED: The late Carol Hudachek was selected for induction into the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy Centennial Hall of Fame on June 14.

Inductees into the Hall of Fame were selected in recognition of their sustained and meritorious contributions to the profession of pharmacy, West Virginia University, the WVU School of Pharmacy or the health care society at large.

“The alumni of the WVU School of Pharmacy have not only worked to help improve the health of their fellow citizens, but they have also worked to shape and change the profession of pharmacy, pharmacy practice and health care,” Dean Patricia Chas said. “Our graduates have also worked to improve the health of others through careers in medicine, dentistry and the pharmaceutical industry.”

Hudachek graduated with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy in 1988 and a doctorate of pharmacy in 2003. She was a pharmacist at Weirton Medical Center. Hudachek was active in state and national pharmacy organizations and was past-president of the West Virginia Pharmacists Association and the West Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

She also was active in improving the health of her community by writing health-related articles for local newspapers in order to educate members of her community about certain health conditions and disease states, as well as the importance of proper medication use.

She died in June 2013

CONFERENCE: Jonathan Langham of Wellsburg, a registered piano technician, was among nearly 600 piano service specialists, manufacturers and suppliers from many states, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands who attended the 57th Piano Technicians Guild Annual Convention and Technical Institute in Atlanta July 15-20.

The event offered continuing education in all fields of piano technology, including tuning, repair and rebuilding, institutional work and business, with an emphasis on new developments in piano technology.

Langham attended classes on piano keyboard touch, including how pianos can be altered to suit the touch, whether heavy or light, of the one who plays it; piano construction; and social media in the piano business.

Registered piano technicians must complete three tests: Written, tuning and technical.

BOOK CONTRIBUTOR: Scott D. Miller, president of Bethany College, is the co-executive editor of the eighth volume of “Presidential Perspectives,” a series of books authored by several college and university presidents.

The series offers perspectives on issues facing higher learning institutions nationwide. The 2013-14 series examines how colleges and universities can support environmental initiatives within their present curriculum.

Chapters focus on preparing students for careers in sustainability, implementing environmentally responsible programs and practices on campus and the future of sustainability and its impact on higher education.

Serving as executive editor for the series is Marylouise Fennell, senior counsel for the Council of Independent Colleges and past president of Carlow University. She and Miller have collaborated on 11 books and are regular columnists for College Planning Management and Enrollment Manager.

In his third year as president at Bethany, Miller has served as a campus chief executive officer for nearly 24 years.

VICE PRESIDENT: David W. Ewing has been named vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty at Bethany College.

For the past four years, Ewing has served at Canisus College in New York as dean of the college of arts and sciences. He is also a former dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences at State University of New York, Fredonia, and held additional academic appointments in chemistry at John Carroll University and Ohio State University.

He holds a bachelor of arts degree in biology and general science from Hiram College and a doctorate in physical chemistry from Ohio University.

As the college’s chief academic officer, Ewing will be responsible for establishing academic priorities and overseeing the 11 academic departments, libraries, the McCann Learning Center, office of international studies and the registrar’s office.

He was among more than 100 nominees and applicants for the position, according to college officials.

Bethany College President Scott D. Miller said, “I am confident that Dr. Ewing’s experience as a dean, department chair, faculty member and scholar is a good fit in an exciting era for Bethany College. I look forward to working with him and welcome him to the Bethany family.”

SEMINAR OFFERED: A seminar on creating local church videos will be held at Bethany College’s Buffalo Seminary Sept. 12-13.

Presenters will be Peter M. Morgan, president emeritus of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society and local church historian of National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C.; and John Scott Williams, an electrical engineer and videographer, whose work includes “National City Christian Church … A Dream Come True,” a video celebrating their congregation’s 170th anniversary.

Congregations should send teams of two, with one member having computer competency. Single applicants with computer competency will be accepted. SELECTED: Weirton lawyer Joseph G. Nogay has been accepted for membership into the National Trial Lawyers Top 100 Lawyers, an organization that recognizes the best civil litigators in the United States.

Nogay is a partner with the Weirton law firm of Sellitti, Nogay and McCune. He is admitted to practice in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania and has successfully litigated cases in those states and New Mexico.

He has successfully represented individuals and Fortune 500 companies in litigation.

He is married to Cathy (Samples) Nogay, and they have two sons, Evan of Pittsburgh and Camden of New York City.

The current president of the organization is Mark Geragos, who serves as a legal expert for CNN.

LOOKING AHEAD: Gregory R. Metcalf, RFP, RFC, CWS, is among the first 2,000 professionals who have obtained the Certified Wealth Strategist designation. Administered by Cannon Financial Institute, the designation recognizes individuals who complete study of the issues surrounding effective wealth advising to comprehensively address clients’ wealth management needs.

The designation provides financial services professionals with the technical knowledge, practice management know-how and client communication skills needed to create and build a wealth advisory practice that works effectively for clients with more complex wealth issues.

CUCARESE NAMED: John W. Cucarese has been named a member of the 2014 President’s Council of New York Life. Members of the President’s Council are among the top 5 percent of New York Life’s sales force of 12,000 licensed agents. ANALYST ADDED: Dr. Shelby Haines, a board-certified behavior analyst, has joined the staff of Wheeling Hospital’s Center for Pediatrics.

Haines, the director of special education for Marshall County Schools, is specially trained in the use of applied behavior analysis in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder. ABA has a number of clinical and delivery components that make it unique among evidence-based behavioral health treatments. ABA therapy is used to increase language and communication skills. It also is used to improve attention, focus, social skills, memory and academics. ABA also can be used to help decrease problem behaviors.

Haines earned her bachelor’s degree from Bethany College and her master’s degree in specific learning disabilities from West Virginia University. She has an Ed.S in school psychology from Marshall University and earned her doctorate in special education and educational leadership from WVU.

In 2011, Haines earned a graduate certificate as a board-certified behavior analyst from Penn State and became certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board in 2012.

She holds additional certifications in autism, mental impairment and behavior disorders.

RECOGNITION: Ken Perkins, a financial adviser with Tri-State Financial Services, a full-service insurance and investment firm formed in 1985 and located in Jefferson County since 1991, was recognized for his outstanding success in 2013 at the Cetera Advisor Networks “Connect Conference” held at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans. Doug King, president and CEO of Cetera, congratulated Perkins and recognized him as a President’s Council Member.

As a President’s Council member, Perkins is one of the top representatives at Cetera Advisor Networks. Membership allows the opportunity to network and learn from peers along with the recognition among Cetera representatives and home office staff, King said.

While at the conference, Perkins attended educational and motivational meetings hosted by several industry leaders. Perkins heard from keynote presenters Archie Manning, James Carville and Mary Matalin as well industry leader James Bowen of First Trust. Perkins met with vice presidents from First Trust Portfolios L.P., CNL Securities Corp., BOK Financial, Pershing LLC and many others. Perkins was presented a crystal award July 17, marking his first President’s Council achievement with Cetera.

In 2013, Perkins qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table for the 15th time. Perkins is a life and qualifying member of this organization and has three times achieved Court of the Table honors with MDRT. SPEAKS: Eastern Gateway Community College President Laura Meeks spoke to a group of national and international higher education stakeholders at the Learner Analytics Summit held July 21-23 at the University of Maryland University College.

The conference, themed “Analytics: The Game Changer for Student Success,” was funded by the Kresge Foundation and hosted by UMUC. Meeks received an invitation to be a luncheon speaker because of the college’s Leader College status and work through Achieving the Dream, a national reform movement aimed at improving student success. Her speech was entitled “Getting to the Heart of Our Business – Learning.”

Attendees represented a cross section of four-year and two-year colleges, national organizations, Maryland state and national departments of education and private firms focused on data analytics in education and the Kresge Foundation. The goal of this convening was to create national communities of practice in learning and knowledge of analytics.

The foundation sponsored Meeks’ attendance as well as two members of Eastern Gateway’s ATD core team – Ann Koon, director of public information and web manager, and Christina Wanat, dean of student learning.

Eastern Gateway joined the ATD movement 10 years ago and was chosen as a Leader College in 2009. During the past decade, the college worked to raise the retention and completion rates of all students but especially first-generation, low income and minority students. This work dovetails with the state’s new completion plan requirements and the new performance-based funding formula.
