Ferguson Tire, founded in 1949, marks anniversary
WEIRTON Ferguson Tire hosted a customer appreciation celebration in honor of their 65th anniversary on Tuesday featuring a “Car Cruise” with more than 60 classic vehicles registered for their owners to show off.
The event featured music, promotional giveaways, free food and refreshments, lots of prizes\ and entertainment including a clown, face painting and animal balloons for kids.
Carl Ferguson incorporated the business, now located at 3550 Main St., on Dec. 19, 1949.
“At first he worked for People’s Bank in Weirton and he just decided he wanted a change. He worked for Ziegler Tire in the ’40s on Ferguson Street, and then eventually he decided to go out on his own,” John Skerbetz, co-owner, explained. “He was all about treating people fair, giving customers a fair shake. And we’ve stuck to that.”
Carol Skerbetz, John’s mother, said that in the early days of the business, Ferguson would do whatever he could to help out his customers.
“Back then he just gave credit to people if they couldn’t pay,” she observed. “He built it up from nothing.”
Another reason the family-owned
shop has been successful is diversity, according to John Skerbetz.
“We do everything. We’ve serviced coal mine operations, school bus manufacturers, all sorts of things. We never focused too much on just one single aspect of the industry,” he noted.
Patty Benkoski, administrative assistant, has been with the company for more than 30 years and played a big role in organizing the anniversary celebration.
“It’s family here. All the employees are like a family,” she commented with a smile. “That’s why I’ve stuck around.”
Mayor George Kondik was on hand to award co-owners John Skerbetz and Gene Ferguson with an official proclamation stating July 22, 2014, would be recognized as Ferguson Tire Day in the city.
“This is a great business. The quality of their services and products have kept them independent for the past 65 years, and that’s really something to be recognized. I thank them, and I’m sure the community thanks them for their contributions to the vitality of Weirton’s economy,” Kondik commented.
Today, Ferguson Tire has about 20 employees and offers road service for tire repairs, tire patches and all other tire repair work, retreading, balancing, rim repairs, valve replacements, nitrogen tire fill and tires for all types of vehicles, including snow tires, all season tires, off road tires and high performance tires.
