Chamber awards scholarship

WELLSBURG – Anthony Barnhart of Wellsburg is the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Wellsburg Chamber of Commerce, the first to be presented by the group in recent years.

The son of William and Kim Barnhart and a 2014 Brooke High School graduate, he plans to attend Fairmont State University and major in secondary education this fall.

Barnhart said he enjoys working with children and decided to pursue teaching as a career after job shadowing Jeri Andrews, a business instructor at Brooke High School.

Barnhart was chosen for his academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities.

A member of Wellsburg Presbyterian Church, Barnhart lettered in cross country, track and basketball at Brooke and is interested in serving as a basketball coach.

Jacie Ridgley, Chamber executive director, said the scholarship comes from membership dues paid by chambers. She said Chamber members strongly supported the idea of awarding a scholarship to a local teen, and she hopes it can become a yearly tradition.

She and Chamber President Richard Krisak said chamber members also benefit from an e-newsletter that keeps them aware of local events and specials at member businesses, exposure through the Brooke Scene’s centerspread and networking with other professionals at a Business After Hours held by various members.

In recent months the chamber has hosted the Breakfasts with Inspiration series of talks by community leaders.
