Construction continues on Boscov’s at Ohio Valley Mall
ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Workers are putting the finishing touches on the new Boscov’s department store at the Ohio Valley Mall at the same time Macy’s is undergoing significant renovations.
That means customers will find a new and improved facility when they hit the mall for Black Friday sales and other holiday shopping sprees.
Work to transform the space once occupied by J.C. Penney into 180,000 square feet of retail space for Boscov’s is nearly complete. The center is expected to house a community auditorium, where entertainers, fashion shows and other events will be held.
There are more than 40 Boscov’s stores in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Maryland, but this one will be the company’s initial foray into Ohio.
Down the hall from Boscov’s, the 100,000 square-foot Macy’s is getting its first “full store refresh” since it opened as Kaufmann’s in 1979. The project is ongoing as the store remains open for business.
New flooring, wall treatments, paint and additional lighting are some of the improvements taking place at Macy’s, while the aisles also will be reconfigured to improve flow and sight lines.
To make room for Boscov’s, other mall retailers were on the move over the summer. The Shoe Department opened in its new location in the former spots occupied by GAP and Baby GAP. Books-a-Million moved into its new location just across the hall and closer to Sears from the Shoe Dept. BAM was the final store that occupied the corner spot near J.C. Penney that originally was occupied by Walden Books. Now, BAM has more than three times the space of its previous location, while its inventory and offerings have increased accordingly.
Across the walkway is new merchant MC Sports. Victoria Secret also has a new location in the Sears concourse.
The Sears at the south end of the center is one of few original stores remaining from when the mall opened in the late 1970s, while the Kmart at the north end has been in place since replacing Montgomery Ward in 1983. Other current anchor stores are Elder-Beerman and Crafts 2000.
